Marine Study
With a background in Biology, I have always been fascinated with the structure of marine creatures under a microscope. This body of work is an investigation into the structure of the creature itself, as well as the atmosphere in which it lives. These pieces are fired in atmospheric kilns to reflect the ideas of marine life in uncontrolled atmosphere we human have created.
Uni & Oil
2018. 23" x 23" x 2". Porcelain, plexiglass, metal stand-offs. Cone 10 Soda.
These pieces are a cross section of a sea urchins spine. The sea urchin is a delicacy and a large export from the Gulf of Mexico, however, the sea urchin population has greatly decreased in the Gulf due to the largest oil spill in history. When sea urchins become diseased, the spines begin to wilt, break and deteriorate, ultimately killing the creature.
Both pieces are slip-casted. The black form has added organic matter (food) that burns away in the kiln and leaves a cavity-like structure, which resembles disease or decay.
Marine Protozoa
2016. 4'3" x 5'6" x 3'5" Porcelain, wood. Cone 10. Various firing techniques (wood, soda, salt, sagger).
Inspired by Ernst Haekel's book, Art Forms in Nature, this work is a study to the vast number of creatures within the ocean unseen to the human eye.

Moss Animal
2016. 14” x 14” x 1.5” Porcelain. Cone 10 Wood/Salt fired.

Dissipating Fractal
2016. 10" x 10" x 2" Porcelain,underglaze, wood. Cone 10 Soda.
By Adding paper to my casting slip, I am able to pour out thin sheets that can withstand high temperature atmospheric firings.
